Essaouira, also known by the old denomination of Mogadur, Mogador in Portuguese, is a Moroccan port city, located on the western Atlantic coast, north of Cape Sim. It is the capital of the homonymous province, in the region of Marrakech-Tensift-Al Hauz. With about 70,000 inhabitants, its medina or historical center is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2001. The economy of the place revolves around fishing, the wood, textile and food industry, and the trade in handicraft products , marquetry and jewelry in particular. It has a gas pipeline and an airfield. Essaouira hosts annually the Gnawa Festival of Essaouira that attracts thousands of visitors.
